Navigating Your Emotional Landscape During an Apocalypse

Maybe a little dramatic, but these times do feel rather apocalyptic.

It’s easy to get trapped in the emotional resonance of anxiety, worry and fear that is so prevalent in our reality now. There is an art and a skill to emotional regulation that can be practiced and learned. It’s a healing path that requires the courage to genuinely feel, to ride the roller coaster of the human experience with both hands raised up in the air, to run barefoot through your inner landscapes and howl wildly into the darkness!

Everything is energy, including your emotions. In this energetic world, the law of resonance rules. As a conscious human being, you can use your emotions as tools to help you tune into the mechanics of this natural law. Your emotional energy is some of the most powerful fuel you can access as a means to influencing your reality. It’s an elixir that can heal generational wounds.

Your emotional landscape shapes the material world.

Your emotional landscape is made up of more than just what you’re feeling on the surface from moment to moment. Its topography is molded by all your internalized beliefs. Its texture is created by all the emotions you resist or repress. The paths that you walk along in your emotional landscape may become confusing endless circles when your inner-beliefs conflict with your actions and habits. These paths might become overgrown and treacherous when a comfort zone has been established and complacency nurtured. 

If you were to map out your current emotional state as a landscape, how would it look?

Imagine the topography and the texture of your inner-world. Where do the rivers flow? Where do the trails and pathways lead? Let your imagination show you what you need to know.

If it’s helpful, you can sketch it out on paper. Allow the information to be metaphorical at first, then go back to make sense of it later. You’ll likely discover areas of your emotional world that need your loving attention.

These times we’re living in right now are certainly challenging all of us who live in pursuit of a grounded and regulated nervous system. The media we consume is saturated with divisiveness, chaos and suffering. For so many people, daily life is ridden with uncertainty and instability and the threat of danger.

If you’re struggling to maintain peace in your emotional landscape, you’re not alone. But you may be surprised to realize that you’re also in perfect divine alignment with the transformation that is sweeping through humanity.

You are not meant to feel at ease in these chaotic times. Your discomfort is holy.

It’s letting you know that something is out of alignment, something is off. Which means something needs to change and transformation is imminent.

We have no doubt been placated and numbed to this dissonant energy for decades but it’s always been there, humming below the surface in the shadows of our modern world. The spell is being broken now. Many of us are finding it more and more difficult to assuage or ignore the buzz of existential pain that pervades everything.

Don’t reach for the next distraction. Feel it. Notice why you’re uncomfortable.

Remember that you’re interconnected with all living beings. You’re affected by the energy of your ancestors. You’re affected by the history carried in the land beneath your feet. You’re affected by the actions of your governments. You’re affected by the way you spend your money.

So many factors influence your emotional landscape, which generates your personal energetic signature aka your resonance. When you awaken to the empowerment within this truth, you discover the keys to shaping reality and harmonizing what is out of balance within yourself and within the collective consciousness.

Everything in your personal life that’s changing now is happening in alignment with this great awakening.

If things are falling away or not working out the way you expected, trust that it’s creating space for you to grow. If wild opportunities are presenting themselves to you, accept the adventure. If you’re feeling an itch to do something different or an ache to move toward something new, dig into it. Now is the time to connect to your courage, surrender to the unknown and welcome your inner evolution.

The revolution begins with the practice of allowing yourself to be uncomfortable. It begins with learning to hold multiple truths at once. It begins with cultivating a grounded sensitivity to your emotions.

Your emotions are a guidance system.

But to get a clear signal, you must be brave enough to feel them, honestly and without judgment. You must be disciplined enough to nurture discernment so that you can empathize without losing your center.

These skills will become your greatest strength. They grant you the power to face any challenge and charge you up with creative inspiration. You’ll be more capable of innovating new ideas. You’ll have more capacity to make changes that improve the world around you and help you to evolve into the best version of yourself.

Consider where you’re at on this scale of emotional sensitivity.

  • How often do you find yourself tamping down or hiding from your emotions?

  • How likely are you to numb yourself from humanity’s pain, let alone your own?

  • Are you familiar with the subtle sensations of your emotions in your body?

Modern society has led us to believe that our emotions are something that need to be controlled, but our emotions keep us honest.

We cannot stay polite when facing the turmoil of our fellow humans and our planet! It’s our duty to let our emotions be a little louder now.

Recognize the power you carry, just in your ability to care and your willingness to empathize with the horrors that so many humans are living through right now.

The humanitarian crisis that Palestinians are facing in Gaza right now is a gauge you can use to notice your emotional capacity. If you carry complacency in your heart toward genocide, it directly translates to complacency toward all humans, toward basic human rights and ultimately toward your own self and all the humans you love in this world. It is emotionally intelligent and spiritually harmonious to be outraged and horrified and heartbroken by these events.

It is also equally important to spend time in your tenderness, savoring every precious moment and treasuring all that you have.

Let the fire of your emotions keep you warm! You are alive!

Are you willing to welcome all the pain, grief, confusion, frustration, maliciousness, ugliness and rage while also welcoming gratitude, joy, ecstasy, bliss, beauty, inspiration, amusement and the absolute thrill of being a human? 


Here are some simple actions you can take in your daily life to help improve your emotional capacity :

  • Mirror Work : gaze into your own eyes for at least 3 minutes daily. Repeat a loving affirmation or intention. (example: “May all beings be loved, may all beings be free.”) If you feel like crying, let that happen.

  • Morning Pages : dump your thoughts and fill up three pages with whatever comes to mind. Do this every morning when you wake up. It doesn’t need to make sense or be profound.

  • Breath of Joy : a simple exercise that synchronizes your body movements with your breath and offers a quick nervous system reset 

  • Chakra Visualization : Imagine your chakras gently glowing with their corresponding colors. You might benefit from listening to a guided meditation for this. I recommend searching on the free app Insight Timer.

  • Gratitude and Goals : before sleep, write something you’re grateful for today and something you intend to accomplish tomorrow

  • Reiki : flood your system with nourishing life force energy. Visit a trusted Reiki practitioner or, if you’re attuned, do a self-Reiki session either when you wake up or before sleeping.

Reiki is a gentle healing modality that activates your body’s natural ability to regulate emotions.

When your system receives Reiki energy, it goes into “Rest and Digest” mode. Generally this allows you to experience a sense of inner-peace and ease. From this grounded and centered state, you can move with more grace and think more clearly. You’ll be more discerning and confident as you navigate your emotional landscape, which creates a strong foundation for your empowerment, your empathy and your ability to welcome change in chaotic times.
